Is youth football safe?

Cleveland Warriors Youth Football believes strongly in developing young people and building a winning team culture, but we put safety ahead of every other goal.

All of our coaches are certified in USA Football's Heads Up Football program to be able to spot the signs of concussions. In the event that a player is suspected of having a concussion, he is removed from the game or practice and placed in the concussion protocol.

Players in our tackle programs learn ways to make contact shoulder to hip and keep their heads out of tackling and blocking plays.

In particular, our 3-4 rookie tackle and K-2 flag program play with modified rules that emphasize safety and fun while teaching players how to play the game.

There are risks in all sports, but as a youth football association, we do everything we can to minimize them.

See more information on our Safety page.

What information do I need to register?

You’ll need names and contact info for parents or guardians, the student athlete’s school information for fall 2018-19, medical insurance company and policy number, and name and phone number for the athlete’s doctor. You’ll also receive information about concussions.

We will follow up with additional paperwork, including medical forms, that must be completed and turned in before August 6 for your student to be eligible to play.

What do the costs cover?

Signing up an athlete to play Warriors Youth Football costs $180, which is the price set by the Portland Interscholastic League. Payment plans are available. Costs for K-2 students playing flag football are $50.

Football is an expensive sport and has a long season, and we provide a great value for the number of hours players receive in practice and in games.

We highly encourage families who can afford it to give an a tax-deductible donation of $25, $50 or $100 either through our PayPal or Go Fund Me campaigns. These funds go first toward covering need-based scholarships and second toward league fees, gears and other operational costs.

How long is the season?

We spend August in preseason practice beginning on August 6 and going for two hours every weeknight until the start of school on August 27. The regular season starts the Saturday after Labor Day (September 8) and runs for the next eight Saturdays with the season ending on the last Saturday, October 27, 2018. There is a chance that teams in grades 5 and higher could make the playoffs. There are no playoffs for grade 4 and younger.

How much will my kid play?

On larger teams, often the older players and players with the most experience will get the most downs.

Typically, CYFL coaches will reward players who show up on time at practice and give a big effort with more playing time regardless of skill level.

Dedicated to player and youth development, our coaches make an effort to give each player more than the 10 plays per game mandated by the league.
